Profesor socjologii i antropologii społecznej. Jest założycielem i wieloletnim dyrektorem Instytutu Studiów Europejskich Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. 
W latach 2016-2019 był Dziekanem Wydziału Studiów Międzynarodowych i Politycznych UJ. Pełnił również funkcje Pełnomocnika Rektora UJ ds. współpracy międzynarodowej (2012-2016), Dyrektora Instytutu Europeistyki UJ (2004-2012), Kierownika Katedry Europeistyki UJ (2000-2004), Dziekana Wydziału Filozofii UJ (1993-1999) oraz Dyrektora Instytutu Socjologii UJ (1991–1994). Był także profesorem Wyższej Szkoły Administracji w Bielsku-Białej, członkiem Rady do spraw Edukacji Europejskiej przy Ministrze Edukacji Narodowej oraz zespołu doradców Głównego Negocjatora Rządu RP do spraw Członkostwa w UE. Jest Przewodniczącym Komisji Spraw Europejskich Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności.

Badania kulturowych procesów kształtowania tożsamości, szczególnie narodowej i europejskiej; naród, nacjonalizm i mniejszości etniczne; migracja; pamięć zbiorowa i dziedzictwo kulturowe; demokracja i tożsamość; rozwój idei Europy.
